Norway redfish

Sebastes viviparus

Distribution

This species found on the continental shelf in the North-eastern Atlantic, from the Barents Sea to Iceland. It is common in the warmer waters off southern and western Iceland. It also occurs in the north but is rather rare. Compared to the other Atlantic redfish species it lives in shallower waters and is smaller.

Fisheries

The Norway redfish was and is probably a common bycatch in fisheries for it larger cousin, the golden redfish. But the Norway redfish was probably discarded or not separated from other redfishes before because of its small size. A target fishery did recently evolve but seems only to have been temporary as current catches are very low.
